HONEST REVIEW
- Training Methodology: * Observation: Mornings are dedicated to observing high-volume “paying” Phaco lists performed by senior consultants. This is a crucial time to discuss fluidics, power settings, and specific techniques.
- Hands-on: Surgical training typically takes place in the afternoon once the main hospital list is cleared.
- Technique: You are taught corneal incision techniques with foldable IOL implantation.
- Mentorship: * The institute uses a multi-consultant approach, allowing you to learn various “tips and tricks” from different surgeons.
- Trainers are noted for being extremely patient; they provide verbal guidance through difficult steps and only take over the surgery if the safety of the eye is compromised.
- Facilities: * Wet Lab: Available for practice during free time to refine incision and suturing skills.
- Infrastructure: Modern OTs with various Phaco platforms (e.g., Alcon, Abbott/J&J).
- Work-Life Balance: Once your daily case is finished in the afternoon, you are generally free. Panvel is well-connected to Mumbai and the Western Ghats for short weekend trips.
PERSONAL OPINION
Laxmi Eye Institute is a “Phaco Finisher” program. It is perfectly designed for ophthalmologists who have a basic understanding of surgery but need a structured environment to gain the confidence required for independent Phaco practice. The “one case per day” pace ensures you aren’t overwhelmed and have time to mentally process each step. While it is pricier than some trust-based programs in smaller cities, the quality of mentorship and the legacy of Dr. Haldipurkar make it worth the investment.
