HONEST REVIEW
- Dual Focus: This is one of the rare specialized Cornea programs that officially integrates Phacoemulsification training into the curriculum, though the Phaco component is typically delayed until the second year.
- Surgical Hands-on (Cornea):
- High Volume: Excellent numbers for Total Keratoplasty (TPK) with approximately 50 cases.
- Standard Procedures: Moderate exposure to Optical PK (3–4 cases) and “plenty” of hands-on for Glue BCL and Tenonplasty.
- The Gap: There is no hands-on training for Lamellar Keratoplasty (DALK/DSEK/DMEK).
- Surgical Hands-on (Cataract & Refractive):
- Phacoemulsification: Expect to perform around 100 Phaco cases in the second year.
- Refractive: Exposure is observational only. There is no independent hands-on for LASIK, PRK, or SMILE.
- Training Style: Described as “Self-Learning” through high volume. While senior fellows provide initial guidance, trainees are expected to fine-tune their surgical skills through repeated independent practice.
- Clinical Exposure: Exceptional. Hubli’s location as a referral hub ensures you see almost every “textbook case” of corneal pathology and infection.
- Work Culture & Duties:
- Peripheral Posting: Includes a significant 6-month rotation at peripheral centers.
- Duties: Night duties occur twice a month; Sunday duties once a month.
- Note: Unlike other institutes, fellows at MMJ typically do not have outreach camp duties, as these are managed by the DNB residents.
- Environment: Hectic and busy, but noted to be professional and non-toxic.
PERSONAL OPINION
The Cornea fellowship at M.M. Joshi is a “Clinical & TPK Powerhouse.” It is perfectly suited for candidates who want to become absolute masters of managing corneal infections and perforations while also securing a solid foundation in Phaco surgery (100 cases). It is a “rugged” training ground that builds high surgical confidence through volume. However, those specifically seeking advanced Lamellar or Refractive hands-on may find the program’s scope too narrow in those areas.
