(Rotations between NN-1 Rajajinagar and NN-4 Bommasandra)
STIPEND
- Monthly Remuneration: ₹58,000
- Financial Policy: Competitive private-tier stipend for a 2-year commitment.
DURATION
24 Months (2 Years)
HONEST REVIEW
- Selection & Intake: Inducts 2–3 fellows every six months via a personal interview.
- Institutional Rotation: The program is split evenly: 1 year at the main flagship hospital (NN-1) and 1 year at NN-4. A significant advantage of the NN-4 posting is the integrated exposure to Neuro-Ophthalmology, which is closely linked with pediatric strabismus.
- Surgical Hands-on (Strabismus): This is a standout program for squint surgery. Unlike many centers that restrict fellows to horizontal muscle surgery, NN provides hands-on experience for vertical and oblique muscles.
- Timeline: OT starts by the 2nd or 3rd month.
- Scope: You progress to independent management of common squints and receive guided steps for complex “re-surgeries” (revision cases).
- Pediatric Cataract: Training is provided in the first year, though (as is common nationally) the case volumes for pediatric cataracts are lower than strabismus cases.
- Limitations: The fellowship is strictly sub-specialized. There is no adult cataract (Phaco/SICS) training included. Surgical exposure is limited to squint and pediatric cataract; procedures like NLD probing or lacrimal surgery are not the primary focus.
- ROP Exposure: A dedicated 2-week posting occurs in the final month. This is primarily an observational rotation for screening protocols rather than therapeutic hands-on.
- Work Culture & Academics: The department is described as hectic but professional and non-toxic. Standard hours are 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM. The institute is known for its strong academic culture with regular, structured classes.
- On-Call Duties: * Evening OPD: 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM shifts on a rotational basis.
- Sundays/Nights: One Sunday duty (9:00 AM – 5:00 PM) and one night duty per month.
- Note: There are no outreach camp duties or external peripheral postings.
PERSONAL OPINION
Narayana Nethralaya offers one of the most balanced pediatric fellowships in India, particularly for those wanting to master Strabismology. The exposure to vertical and oblique muscle surgery, combined with the neuro-ophthalmology crossover at NN-4, creates a very high level of diagnostic and surgical competence. It is an elite “academic-private” hybrid choice for candidates who are comfortable stepping away from adult cataracts to become true specialists.
